Our 8th grade students had an awesome day in Medora today visiting the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library! 🇺🇸 Students had the opportunity to explore history in a hands-on way, learn more about Theodore Roosevelt and his connection to North Dakota, and experience a pretty incredible new resource right here in our state.

Calendar Update
FBS Chess Makes Its USCF Tournament Debut! Members of the FBS Chess Team competed in their first USCF-rated tournament on Saturday, September 12, at the Capital City Quads in Bismarck! Seven students and two coaches represented FBS, competing alongside some of North Dakota’s top-ranked chess players, including the current state champion. Our FBS players earned an impressive 12 total points! 🎉 Camdyn Laber took 1st place in his bracket, while Tucker Hoffert tied for 1st in another, finishing just half a point ahead of Jasper Opdahl. Congratulations to all of our players on a great first rated tournament! Competing in USCF-rated tournaments gives players the opportunity to establish an official chess rating and continue challenging themselves against players from across the state. The excitement is growing at FBS! Our full Scholastic Chess Team also kicked off practice this week with 40 students signed up—nearly double last year’s roster! ♟️ We’re excited to see our chess program continue to grow!

Learning Through History: The Man in the Red Bandana

Students in our 7–12 Writing Elective learned about Welles Crowther, known as The Man in the Red Bandana. Welles was a 24-year-old working in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. During the attacks, he used the red bandana he had carried since childhood to cover his face as he helped lead others to safety. Survivors later remembered the unidentified man in the red bandana who repeatedly returned to help others.

After learning his story, students explored the symbolism of the red bandana and wrote about how it represents courage, bravery, sacrifice, and helping others. They then designed their own red bandanas using words and symbols to show what Welles and his story meant to them.

A meaningful way to combine history, writing, reflection, and creativity while remembering the impact one person can have on the lives of others. ❤️🇺🇸

Week in Review at FBS! 💜🖤

It was another busy week of learning and fun at Fessenden-Bowdon!

- 5th & 6th Grade have been learning about Native American housing and demonstrated their learning by building models of the different types of homes they studied.

- Pre-K used apples to explore colors while also practicing important fine motor skills.

- 2nd Grade put their science skills to work with some fun bubble experiments!

- Grades K–6 got into the Homecoming spirit by creating posters to decorate the gym for next week.

- And to wrap it all up, our elementary students had the chance to interview the Homecoming candidates before casting their votes!

We love seeing our students learn, create, explore, and show their Hornet spirit! 🐝💜
